Charlemagne and Carloman
After their father's death, Charlemagne and his brother Carloman took leadership of the Frankish Kingdom. There was a rivalry between the two brothers, leading to Charlemagne's alliance with King Desiderius of the Lombards. This alliance threatened to ruin the treaty that King Pepin had set with the Papacy. Charlemagne married King Desiderius's daughter right before Carloman's death in 771.
